How to Host a Downloaded Front-End Website on Netlify (Step-by-Step)

This guide is written for absolute beginners.
You do not need to know coding, programming, or web hosting.

If you bought a ready-to-use front-end website ZIP file from Gumroad, this guide will help you put that website live on the internet using Netlify (free hosting).

By the end of this guide, you will be able to:

  • Understand what you downloaded

  • Extract the ZIP file correctly

  • Create a free Netlify account

  • Upload your website

  • Get a live website link

  • Share your site with anyone in the world

Everything is explained in simple English.

What You Have After Buying from Gumroad

When you buy a digital product like a website front-end from Gumroad, you usually get:

These files together make a complete front-end website.

But right now, they are only on your computer.
They are not live on the internet.

To make them live, you need hosting.

What Is Netlify?

Netlify is a free hosting platform for static websites.

It allows you to:

  • Upload HTML/CSS/JS files

  • Make a website live in seconds

  • Get a free web address (URL)

  • Change the site name

  • Update your site anytime

The best part:
You don’t need coding, servers, or technical setup.

You just drag and drop your website folder.

What You Need Before Starting

Make sure you have:

  1. A computer or laptop

  2. Internet connection

  3. Your downloaded ZIP file from Gumroad

  4. A Google account (optional, but helpful)

That’s it.

Step 1: Download the ZIP File from Gumroad

  1. Open your Gumroad purchase email

  2. Click on the Download button

  3. Save the ZIP file on your computer
    Example location:

    • Desktop

    • Downloads folder

You will see something like:

my-website-template.zip

This ZIP file is a compressed folder.
You cannot upload it directly.
First, you must extract it.

Step 2: Extract the ZIP File

On Windows:

  1. Right-click the ZIP file

  2. Click “Extract All”

  3. Click Extract

A normal folder will be created with the same name.

On Mac:

  1. Double-click the ZIP file

  2. It will automatically extract into a folder

Now open that extracted folder.

Inside, you should see files like:

  • index.html

  • style.css

  • script.js

  • images folder

This folder is your website folder.

Important:
index.html must be in the main folder, not inside another subfolder.

Correct structure:

MyWebsite/
 ├── index.html
 ├── style.css
 ├── script.js
 └── images/

Wrong structure:

MyWebsite/
 └── another-folder/
      ├── index.html
      ├── style.css

If your files are inside another folder, move them one level up.

This is very important for Netlify to work properly.

Step 3: Create a Free Netlify Account

  1. Open your browser

  2. Go to: https://www.netlify.com/

  3. Click Sign Up

You will see options:

  • Sign up with Google

  • Sign up with GitHub

  • Sign up with Email

Choose Google (easiest).

  1. Allow Netlify access

  2. You will be redirected to the Netlify dashboard

Now your account is ready.

Step 4: Upload Your Website to Netlify

On the Netlify dashboard:

  1. Click “Add new site”

  2. Select Deploy manually

You will see a big box with text like:

“Drag and drop your site folder here”

Now:

  1. Open the folder that contains index.html

  2. Drag that entire folder

  3. Drop it into the Netlify box

Netlify will start uploading.

You will see messages like:

  • Uploading files

  • Processing

  • Deploying

Within a few seconds, your site will be live.

Step 5: Open Your Live Website

After upload, Netlify will generate a URL like:

https://blue-sky-12345.netlify.app

Click that link.

Congratulations!
Your website is now live on the internet.

Anyone can open it from anywhere in the world.

Step 6: Change Your Website Name (Optional but Recommended)

By default, Netlify gives a random name like:

https://blue-sky-84923.netlify.app

You can change it to something better.

  1. Open your Netlify dashboard

  2. Click on your website

  3. Go to Site settings

  4. Click Change site name

  5. Enter a new name, for example:

    myportfolio.netlify.app
  6. Click Save

Now your new URL will be:

https://myportfolio.netlify.app

Choose a simple, clean name.

Step 7: How to Update Your Website in the Future

Let’s say you:

  • Edit text in index.html

  • Change images

  • Update colors

  • Replace logo

After editing files on your computer, you must upload again.

Steps:

  1. Save all changes

  2. Open Netlify dashboard

  3. Open your site

  4. Go to Deploys

  5. Drag and drop your updated folder again

Netlify will replace the old version with the new one.

Your URL remains the same.

Step 8: Check Mobile View

Every modern website must look good on mobile.

  1. Open your Netlify site URL

  2. Right-click → Inspect

  3. Click the mobile icon (📱)

  4. Choose a device like:

  5. Scroll and check layout

If your template is responsive, it will look good automatically.

Step 9: Common Problems and Solutions

Problem 1: Blank Page After Upload

Reason: index.html is not in root folder.

Fix:

  • Open extracted folder

  • Make sure index.html is directly inside it

  • Re-upload correct folder

Problem 2: Images Not Showing

Reason:

  • Wrong folder structure

  • Wrong image path in HTML

Fix:

  • Ensure images folder is uploaded

  • Do not rename image files after upload

  • Keep same structure as provided

Problem 3: 404 Error

Reason:

  • Uploading wrong folder

  • Uploading empty folder

Fix:

  • Upload the folder that contains index.html

Problem 4: CSS Not Working

Reason:

  • style.css missing

  • File name changed

Fix:

  • Restore original file names

  • Re-upload correct folder

Step 10: Re-Uploading a Fresh Copy

If something breaks:

  1. Delete current files

  2. Re-extract original ZIP

  3. Upload fresh folder

  4. Start again clean

Netlify allows unlimited re-uploads.
